” Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and of course each other. If girls dressed for boys they’d just walk around naked at all times” Betsey Johnson. That being said this is why we love Betsey so much. Betsey Johnson is an American designer best known for her feminine and whimsical designs . From tutus to tule and lace she has kept her whimsical style fresh and modern. She once described her style formula ” take a leotard and add a skirt”.

She is also known famously for doing a cartwheel at the end of her fashion shows. This is amazing coming from a designer who started her carrier in 1969 part of the youth quake fashion movement and Andy Warhol group. Betsey designed for such icons as Edie Sedwick and Lisa Loeb.

With her whimsical dresses many are embellished and usually begin with her trade mark prints. She tends to combine unlikely colors and materials as a nod to the artist that she is. How ever they come together seamlessly in an overall cohesive look. Such as is seen in this velvet on silk patterned gown with neon pink ribbon details.
